My longest running weekly (and the 2nd longest running weekly in Indianapolis) is turning 7 this coming Tuesday. It’s been a lot of fun over the years, but an amazing amount of work as well. Holding down a weekly gig for even a year can be challenging, but to do it for this amount of time is damn near impossible. Oh yeah, did I mention that I cart all of the gear and sound every week down to the spot as well. Yeah, son… DEDICATION. I’ve only missed 4 weeks in 7 Years also. So, nonetheless, I’m proud of this party and the fact that I have an outlet to play everything except the same tired radio rotation and current hits (we refuse to do that here and have a staunch “NO REQUESTS” policy… Oh, and a “IF YOU DON’T TIP THE BARTENDER, YOU’RE AN ASSHOLE” policy that has also become famous in Indy).

Come help J. Moore and I celebrate this Tuesday, March 12th with some good ol’ hip hop, soul, funk, reggae and party classics.

This has been done for a couple weeks, but finally getting it posted. I know there are still a lot of Wu heads out there that will enjoy this, but them aside, how can you not be entertained by Ghost’s semantics? He’s one of my favorites anyways.

I also realized while making this that he has WAY too much material for one single mix so I’ve pulled some of his more obvious pieces and will put them on Vol. 2 (which I’ve already started also). So, yeah, there’s some sleepers, album cuts, and guest features on here to go with some of his classics.

Enjoy!

Just wrapped this mix up, it’ll be live within the next few days. Also, I realized while recording this that he has WAY too much music for only one volume so I actually spaced out the “hits” so there are some surprises on this mix that only the true GFK fans will be hip to and some of the obvious jams will be on volume 2.

Stay tuned…

This past Thursday, Jan. 24th, I was able to see 5 months of work culminate with a really dope event I’ve been waiting 3 years for Red Bull allow me to bring to Indy. Well, ultimately, the wait was well worth it as nearly 1,000 people packed into Deluxe at the Old National Centre to see Action Jackson, Buck Rodgers, Cool Hand Lex, Indiana Jones & Limelight battle it out for $5,000 and the chance to advance to Chicago next month at the regional.

Honestly, all of these dudes did the damn thing! The energy was insane and the sets were so strong that Four Color Zack, Big Once & TopSpeed had to deliver one of the first ties in Thre3Style history.

Congrats to Buck Rodgers on taking the victory, but big ups to them all! Check out their sets here:

Buck Rodgers

Action Jackson

Limelight

Cool Hand Lex

Indiana Jones

The newest mix by DJ Haylow is more than just a compilation of songs. It is a mindset.Brasiliana takes place in the late 60′s, early 70′s, and it is truly a beautiful place. The vibe is one of pipes and smoking jackets while entertaining a social event in your mod style case study house overlooking the city, or it could be a relaxing day on a deserted white sand beach. Either way, Brasiliana is musical enjoyment at the fullest, designed to paint a picture of another world and era. An assortment of lounge music, you will hear bossa nova, samba, and jazz by Brazilian, Italian, and American artists, singers, composers, musicians, and arrangers. There is no limit to instrumentation, as each song holds unique qualities that make them different from the next, though the mix in it’s entirety has a marvelously cohesive sound that makes it an easy listen from start to finish.
This is a glimpse into a time that sparks intrigue, style, fascination, and wonderment.
Welcome to Brasiliana.

I recently completed my latest mix, “Collections & Connections, vol. 1”… it’s a concept mix based entirely  on song-to-song relationships (might be a sample, might be wordplay, etc, etc). Feel free to download or pass the link along to anyone of interest.

By the way, the cover shows the majority of acts that are on the mix. Curious how many people you all can identify before opening up the file?

So after Exile’s performance on the 21st, we’re going to open up the sound system to basically anyone that wants to play material, new or old, in front of a crowd. Maybe you want to test the mix on a new record, or maybe you haven’t heard it outside of your car or headphones yet, or maybe you just want to get the reaction from a crowd of people. Whatever it is, this is your opportunity… and it’s only $5 to get in all night regardless. I’d suggest getting to the show early enough to see Exile perform though… trust me, you won’t be mad.

I am very fortunate to hold the ambassador position for Indiana on behalf of the RBMA. It’s an incredible program and I’d suggest any musicians/producers/instrumentalists/singers/musically inclined people to look into it. On that note, I have two events coming up this month that will highlight the Academy and bring the locals out to some cool events. Hope some of you can attend one of these shows with Starkey on Friday, March 16th and Exile & Lester Johnson on Weds, March 21st.

"I just like creating stuff and trying to make good work, whatever it is. I don’t care if it’s designing toothbrushes. It’s just making cool stuff to leave behind, that’s all it is, it’s nothing more."

-

Andre 3000 (via jessethorn)

I have intensely mixed feelings about this quote. It’s a nice sentiment in theory but the actual output of its source isn’t working in its favor. Because uh… nobody wants a damn Andre 3000 toothbrush! And I sincerely doubt that Andre 3000 possesses the skills necessary to design a good toothbrush. It’d probably have polka dots all up on the bristles.

Oftentimes “just making cool stuff” without acquiring the ability to do it well only equates to filling space. (Being a famous rapper engenders and amplifies this sort of behavior. Dudes suddenly have a platform for their laughably bad cool stuff.) It’d be pretty hard to qualify any of the non-rapping creative work that Dre has done in recent years - actor, kilt designer, shaving cream spokesperson - as particularly good.

I’m not of the belief that Andre owes us anything in particular with regards to rapping, if he wants to be a hermit then let him be a hermit. But if he’s going to slang toothbrushes instead he owes it to his audience to do it right. He needs to bury himself in the craft of toothbrush cobbling and only emerge when he’s actually reached a base level of competency, if not excellence. Maybe, after years of practice, he could eventually make a toothbrush that was even half as good as ATLiens. Gums everywhere would love that shit and his idealism above would finally be validated.

Or he could just focus on doing that one thing that he’s already very good at.
